High School Students Summit on “World Tsunami Awareness Day” 2024 in Kumamoto

We held the summit in October 2024.

  • The general theme of the summit was "Lessons from Kumamoto for the World and the Future".​
  • 524 high school students from 44 countries and regions, including Japan, participated and discussed what they could do.
  • ​ In the Workshops, students were divided into 15 groups, and discussed an assigned theme ("Disaster prevention", "Disaster risk reduction", "Creative reconstruction"). They created an action plan by discussing examples of disasters in their respective countries and regions and the necessary countermeasures. The group representatives presented their action plan at the General Meeting, Closing Ceremony.
  • The chairperson and vice chairpersons compiled the group action plans into a "Declaration" and announced it at the end of the General Meeting, Closing Ceremony.​

General Theme "Lessons from Kumamoto for the World and the Future"
     Learn about life-saving measures and creative reconstruction in Kumamoto, which has experienced large-scale natural hazards such as earthquakes and torrential rains.
Goals of the Workshops 1."Disaster prevention" through self-help and mutual assistance
2."Disaster risk reduction" in harmony with nature
3."Creative reconstruction" based on lessons learned from major disasters
