What is Kumamoto Artpolis?(English)

Background

+ As Japan industrialized buildings and homes were built, forming narrow streets, streets which became the foundation for new towns.
+ Even after the introduction of steel frames and reinforced concrete, Japanese towns have been reconstructed every twenty years.
+ Facing the second reconstruction period since World War II, and at a time when city redevelopment projects had been incorporated, the Artpolis project was launched in 1988.

Objectives

+ It is time for human beings to pursue not only material wealth but also spiritual wealth. Construction must hence be focus on design as well as function.
+ The Artpolis Project strives to make Kumamoto a global center for regarding the construction of well made buildings that can be passed down to succeeding generations as well as the development of local areas and creating an overall high quality living environment.
+We aim to enhance the city's culture and architectural culture via the independent creativity of the local residents and by raising awareness of environmental design.

Honored Distinctions

+ This is the first attempt at such a project here in Japan and will prove very useful for Kumamoto. It will create unique and attractive cultural assets for a revitalized culture.
+ The Artpolis Project has been widely recognized for its method of promoting urban development by using local revitalization programs.
+ Participating projects have received many awards from organizations such as the Architectural Institute of Japan for Design. In 1993, Artpolis received the Prize in appreciation of its many social and cultural contributions. Additionally more than 70 prizes worldwide and nationwide, both big and small, have been awarded for specific projects. The participating projects of Artpolis have been widely recognized.
+ Among the 74 participating projects, 67 have been completed as of March, 2006
